Teddy Long thinks WWE has squeezed about as much as it can out of The Bloodline in its current form. As far as he’s concerned, the reason the company keeps going back to it is pretty simple: “they have nothing else.”
Speaking on WrestleMagicPod, Long was responding to the interviewer saying they were tired of seeing The Bloodline and felt WWE was recycling the same material. Long didn’t exactly rush to defend the company.
“Well, because they have nothing else. You know what I mean? And it’s like the old-school days, they would call it repackage. You know what I mean? But you just can’t keep repackaging stuff, you know?”
Long does think there was a way WWE could have breathed some new life into The Bloodline. His idea would have brought Rikishi directly into the family drama and put him in the middle of a major fight involving his sons.
“So, my thing with The Bloodline, I think they could have revived that is they could have had some big feud there between Rikishi’s boys, where they got into a big fight.”
That’s where Long’s pitch gets a little more interesting. Instead of having Rikishi successfully play peacemaker, Long would have had him come down and seemingly calm everything down. Then both of his sons would turn on him and beat up their own father.
“They—I mean, they were just beating the dog out of each other, and here comes Rikishi. Now, Rikishi comes down, he tries to straighten things out with them. He thinks that he done kind of calmed them down, and they both jump their dad.”
For Long, that would immediately tell fans that this version of The Bloodline had gone somewhere much darker. If they were willing to attack Rikishi when he came down to help them, there wouldn’t be much left of the family line they wouldn’t cross.
“Now you got something, you know? Now your father come down to help you, and you beat him up. So that’s letting you know, now we ain’t no joke. We ain’t playing now. This is The Bloodline.”
The interviewer liked the idea, but Long doesn’t exactly expect WWE to suddenly put it on television. He finished the pitch with a pretty funny prediction about what would happen if the company knew where it came from.
“Yeah, it’ll never happen if it came from me.”
So Long isn’t necessarily saying WWE needed to abandon The Bloodline completely. He thinks the problem is continuing to repackage the same thing when a major family betrayal involving Rikishi could have given the story a much-needed jolt.
