Wendy Choo was among the names cut during WWE’s latest round of NXT releases, and now there’s more insight into why the company decided to move on. After years in the developmental system and less time on television, WWE ultimately reached the point where it no longer saw a future for her on the brand.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed Choo’s release and pointed to just how long she had already been developing before WWE made the call.

“She’d been there forever. You know, she’d been developing for a long, long, long time. And she wasn’t even on the NXT shows anymore.”

Meltzer also wasn’t shy about criticizing the sleeping gimmick that became Choo’s most recognizable character in NXT. While he clearly hated the character, he made sure to separate that from Choo’s actual ability in the ring.

“I didn’t, you know, I thought her gimmick with the. The woman always sleeping and everything, there’s a really terrible gimmick anyway.”

That wasn’t the end of it. Meltzer said Choo wasn’t viewed as a bad wrestler, but WWE had ultimately made its decision after her lengthy run in the system.

“Not a bad wrestler, but, you know, obviously again with her, they made the choice that, you know, that. That she wasn’t gonna make it. She’s been around a long time.”

Choo had been in WWE developmental for years and went through multiple versions of her character, but her television presence had already faded before the company made the final cut. By that point, WWE had apparently seen enough and decided it was time to close the book on her NXT run.

For Wendy Choo, the release wasn’t some sudden shock after a major push. She had already slipped out of the weekly mix, and after years of development without WWE finding a lasting spot for her, the company finally pulled the plug.

Do you think WWE gave Wendy Choo enough chances before releasing her, or should they have tried one more character reset? Let us know what you think in the comments.
