Vito informs that they had a female referee working their match that evening, and she quickly became overwhelmed. Vito rushed to her in the ring so he could try to protect her from the flying objects, and as a result he suffered several lacerations to his back.
All the other wrestlers came to the ring in order to surround the talent and try to protect them, and they all eventually made their way to the backstage area. It was a stroke of luck that Vito actually mentioned this potential situation to the locker room before his match, so when it actually happened, the locker room was quick to react.
The issue with the locker room was that it was made from cardboard so the fans quickly knocked it down. However, the fans left all the wrestlers’ wallets and personal items untouched. The army actually came and escorted him back to his hotel and from there the US Embassy had to get involved.
He was asked that night if he was ready to go home, but Vito refused because he wanted to stay and finish what he started. The Embassy made a statement saying that anyone who hurt the American wrestler (Vito) would be shot and arrested. So Vito walked around with a little more comfort after that.
