Vince Russo just flipped the script on a narrative that’s followed him for years.
The former WCW and WWE head writer has long been accused by fans of hating AEW and constantly taking shots at its president, Tony Khan. But during a recent discussion on the Two Man Power Trip podcast, Russo made it crystal clear — not only does he not hate Tony Khan, he actually considers himself a fan.
The conversation started with Russo addressing the perception that he buries AEW regularly. He first clarified that he doesn’t even watch the product anymore, which means he doesn’t critique it.
“First of all, bro, I have not watched one single AEW show in over five years. I do not critique anything I don’t watch. If I don’t watch it, I ain’t going to critique it. I didn’t watch it.”
But what came next is what really turned heads. Russo explained that when Tony Khan comes up on his platform, it’s because of Khan’s public persona — not because of personal animosity. He described Khan as entertaining and unique, especially during media appearances. Then Russo made his stance unmistakable.
“Does Tony Khan make appearances on Castrating the Marks every single week? He absolutely does because he’s a character. He’s freaking funny. He’s unique. He does crazy things. He does stupid things. He has those ridiculous scrums.”
“So, I’m actually a fan of Tony Khan. Bro, I swear to God, just a week ago, Nick Khan took a shot at Tony Khan and I was pissed off. I was freaking pissed off, bro. Tony Khan is freaking harmless. You know what I’m saying, bro? He’s harmless. He loves the business. He genuinely believes what he’s doing is right. I am without a shadow of a doubt a fan of Tony K.”
That’s not sarcasm. That’s not backhanded praise. That’s Russo openly saying he supports the AEW President. For someone who’s been labeled an AEW critic for years, the admission is significant. Russo doesn’t frame Tony Khan as a rival promoter or a target — he frames him as passionate, well-meaning, and sincere in his love for the wrestling business. Whether you agree with Russo or not, one thing is now clear: he doesn’t see Tony Khan as the villain many assume he does.
Does Russo calling himself a fan of Tony Khan surprise you? And does this change the way you view his past comments about AEW? Drop your thoughts below and let us know.
