Steve Maclin’s post-TNA future just got another wrinkle, as the free agent has now been stripped of the Boca Raton Championship Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.
BRCW confirmed the move after releasing footage from an interview featuring Maclin, Chairman and CEO Matthew Maschler, and EVP Neil Glazier. Things quickly went off the rails when Maclin blasted Maschler for talking trash without being willing to step into the ring himself. Maclin then made it clear he had no intention of showing up for the promotion’s August 16 Summer Smash event.
“Maybe you can get in the ring instead of me. Go f**k yourself. I won’t be there August 16.”
After Maclin left the call, Maschler confirmed he was off the card and announced that Maclin was being stripped of the BRCW Heavyweight Championship.
The timing is interesting because Maclin has been surrounded by speculation since leaving TNA in June. The angle could simply be a storyline designed to explain his exit from BRCW, but it comes while questions continue about where he could land next.
AEW has been one of the biggest possibilities. It was noted in July that there had been at least preliminary contact between Maclin and AEW, although no deal had been confirmed. Maclin’s wife, Deonna Purrazzo, is also under contract with AEW.
For now, Maclin is without the BRCW title and his next move remains wide open. Whether this was simply an independent wrestling angle or the first real sign that he is clearing the deck for a bigger destination remains to be seen.
