“Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s latest off-road race went sideways — literally.
The WWE Hall of Famer was competing in the Stomping Grounds 300 in Yerington, Nevada on August 22 when a mistake on the course knocked him out of the race and left his Broken Skull Racing vehicle lying on its side. The good news is Austin and his co-driver walked away without injuries. Austin posted a photo of the wreck afterward and took full responsibility for what happened.
“Made a mistake on the course and knocked us out of the race on Saturday. Myself and co-driver @reddogschopshop are both 100%. The car took some pretty good damage and we are working on getting it ready for VC-Tonopah next race.”
The crash brought an early end to what had been another big weekend for Austin’s new racing obsession. The 61-year-old has thrown himself into off-road competition with his Broken Skull Racing team and had gotten off to one hell of a start before this setback. Austin finished first in his stock-mid category in each of his first two races, placing eighth overall in his debut and 13th overall the next time out.
This time, though, there was no comeback. Austin said the crew managed to get the damaged vehicle back together well enough to drive it to the main pit using the back roads, but his goal of finishing every race this season officially went up in smoke. Austin isn’t letting the wreck scare him away. If anything, he’s treating it like another lesson as he continues learning the ropes behind the wheel.
“We put the car back together good enough to drive back to main pit on the back roads. This has been a great season of racing and the H2 is a helluva car. We set out to finish every race. And my mistake cost us a finish.”
“I have learned many things from it that I will take into future races.”
This wasn’t the first time Austin has run into trouble on the course either. During his second race in July, he had to dodge a massive rock that caused damage to the vehicle, but he was still able to finish that one.
Austin has clearly found a new way to get his adrenaline fix after wrestling. He’s already won his class twice, wrecked a car, walked away from it and is talking about getting the machine repaired in time for the next race. That sounds about as “Stone Cold” as off-road racing gets.
