Stephanie McMahon has a story about a stranger on public transit that still gives her the chills. On her What’s Your Story? podcast, she opened up about a run-in on Boston’s subway system, known to locals as the T, where an unsettling moment left her feeling uneasy and alone.
Stephanie said the whole thing started when she hopped on a packed train. With no seats available, she ended up standing near the stairs by the entrance, holding on to a divider next to a seated passenger. Then something happened that she did not see coming.
“I’ll tell you, the creepiest thing happened to me, though. I was on the T in Boston, and it was a packed T. So I was standing on the stairs, like when you first get on.”
She explained that her hand was resting on the divider when she felt something touch her. It was a small moment, but it was enough to make her stop in her tracks: “My hand’s on the divider, and all of a sudden I feel this… grazed my finger. And I was like, ‘Oh.’” When Stephane McMahon looked to her right, she found a man who immediately set off alarm bells. She admitted he didn’t do much, but something about the situation felt off.
“I looked to my right, and this was, like, a creepy-looking guy. And, yeah, it was very—but he didn’t really do anything, right? But it felt weird, though.”
Her cohost reacted with shock, and Stephanie agreed that the whole thing was unsettling. The fact that she was by herself only made it worse.
“And I was alone, you know? And so I just slowly, like, took my hand off and didn’t look at that person again. But, yeah, that was a creepy one.”
Someone asked whether she checked on the man or tried to say anything, and Stephanie shut that idea down fast. She wasn’t about to engage with a stranger who was giving her a bad feeling.
“No, I wasn’t about to try to talk to him. Yeah. And he had dark sunglasses on, couldn’t see his eyes.”
She said the sunglasses added to the mystery, since there was no way to read his expression. She also admitted she wondered whether something else was going on with him.
“Kind of looked like maybe he was on something. Oh, you know, that feels like—it was weird. It was so weird and so personal.”
Her cohost chimed in to say the moment sounded oddly intimate, and Stephanie agreed. She also stressed just how small the contact really was, even if it left a big impression: “But it was just my finger and just, like, that, you know? Just the tip?”
It’s a quick story with no big payoff, but it shows how even a tiny moment with a stranger can stick with someone for years. Stephanie handled it the smart way, quietly pulling away and keeping her distance, and the encounter has clearly stayed with her ever since.
So what do you think? Would you have said something to the man, or is staying quiet and moving away the safest move in a packed train? Tell us about the strangest thing that ever happened to you on public transit, and let us know what stories you want to see us cover next in the comments.
