WWE is not wasting time on tonight’s SmackDown, because the show is set to kick off with a major title match.

According to TRNBCKL Gold, Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther for the Undisputed WWE Championship is slated to open the June 19 episode of Friday Night SmackDown. Sami Zayn will serve as the special guest referee for the match.

That is a big way to start the show, especially with Night of Champions right around the corner. Rhodes and Gunther are already coming off a heated issue, and Sami being placed in the middle adds another layer to the whole thing.

Gunther picked Zayn as referee after making it clear he does not trust WWE officials following the controversial finish at Clash in Italy. Now Cody has to defend the title with Sami calling the shots.

SmackDown will air from the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri, starting at 8 PM ET on USA Network.  Be sure to tune in live and follow along with Ringside News for full play-by-play coverage over in our SmackDown results section.

WWE has a packed card tonight, but opening with Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther makes it clear they want to grab fans right away. A world title match, a special referee, and Night of Champions fallout is a pretty strong way to hit the gas.

Do you think Cody Rhodes should retain tonight, or is Gunther walking out with the Undisputed WWE Championship? Let us know what you think in the comments.
