Skye Blue is opening up about the brutal ankle injury that sidelined her for nearly a year, and the damage was apparently far worse than most fans realized.

During an interview with TMZ’s Inside the Ring, the AEW star detailed the horrifying moment doctors explained just how serious the injury actually was after reviewing her scans. According to Skye Blue, the surgeon immediately told her surgery was unavoidable because of how badly her ankle had been destroyed. Then came the line that really shocked her.

“When I went to the surgeon and they did all the scans, he was like, surgery is this day. I was dumbfounded. He said, you don’t have a choice. My ankle was literally detached from my leg. His exact words were, you look like you were in a car crash.”

The injury eventually required major surgery involving a steel plate, six screws on one side of her ankle and two long screws on the inside. Skye Blue admitted the physical recovery was difficult, but mentally things became even harder once she was suddenly stuck at home after constantly being on the road with AEW.

“You’re going from TV twice a week, being on the road, being go, go, go, to okay, you got to sit on the couch and you can’t do anything.”

She also revealed she constantly worried about whether fans and fellow wrestlers would see her differently once she returned. The turning point came when she secretly tried walking again without telling her physical therapist.

“I looked like a crooked pirate, I was hobbling and waddling, but I was like, oh, that didn’t hurt that bad.”

Even now, Skye Blue said she still feels the hardware in her ankle when it gets cold or rainy and even sets off metal detectors at airports. Despite that, she refuses to let the injury slow her down in the ring.

“I just don’t think about it, and I just go.”

After hearing just how severe the injury really was, Skye Blue’s return to AEW television looks even more impressive than fans originally thought.
