Seth Rollins has no interest in pretending both nights of SummerSlam carry the same weight. Just as WWE revealed the lineup for the two-night event, Rollins made it clear that the final match on Sunday is the true main event of the entire weekend.
Speaking with Busted Open Radio on July 27, Rollins was asked whether he prefers wrestling on Night One or Night Two of WWE’s major two-day events. He admitted that most of his WrestleMania matches have taken place on the first night, so SummerSlam will give him a different experience.
“I don’t know that I’ve had much experience with Night Two, to be honest with you. I think about my WrestleMania history, and most of my WrestleManias have been Night One as far as matches are concerned. So, I guess I’ll let you know after Sunday night.”
Bully Ray then asked whether Rollins would rather wrestle early and get the match over with or wait around for the final spot. Rollins didn’t hesitate. He wants the pressure, the spotlight and the responsibility that comes with closing WWE’s biggest events.
“I prefer the pressure of the main event. I like the pressure. I want it all. That’s why you get into the business—the main event and the big shows.”
Rollins said anyone entering wrestling with the goal of working somewhere in the middle of the card is aiming too low. For him, the top spot is not determined by promotional language or WWE calling multiple matches “main events.” It belongs to the match that actually goes on last.
“No offense, but if you’re getting in and saying, ‘You know what? I’d like to be the second match on the card,’ then you’re in the wrong business. I think all of us want to be at the top, and the top is the match that goes on last.”
That is where Rollins drew a clear line in the two-night main event debate. WWE may promote one main event for Saturday and another for Sunday, but Rollins believes the final match of Night Two is the real marquee attraction.
“I don’t care what anybody says. I know there’s a lot of conversation around the WrestleMania main events now that there are two nights, but I’m of the feeling that Night Two, the last match that goes on, is the money draw. That’s the big match. It’s the marquee match.”
“That’s the business I got into, so I’m always, always wanting to close the show.”
The timing of those comments is impossible to miss. WWE announced that Rollins will face Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship on Sunday, August 2, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Night Two card also includes an Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match, Finn Balor vs. Sami Zayn, Danhausen vs. Dominik Mysterio, Trick Williams vs. Baron Corbin and Penta vs. Chad Gable.
