Roman Reigns has spent weeks calling Seth Rollins “number two” heading into their World Heavyweight Championship showdown at WWE SummerSlam. Rollins finally responded, and he isn’t buying it for a second.
Speaking on ESPN’s First Take ahead of one of WWE’s biggest matches of the year, Rollins said Reigns isn’t trying to convince the fans—he’s trying to convince himself. After being asked whether Reigns’ comments bother him, Rollins brushed them off and said the Tribal Chief needs that mindset just to get through the day.
“I mean he has to tell himself that. We all tell ourselves things when we look in the mirror. We have to tell ourselves what we need to get by in the day, and I think that’s what Roman has to tell himself is that Seth Rollins is number two to make himself feel like he’s number one.”
Rollins then took another shot at Reigns by bringing up the phrase that has defined his entire Tribal Chief run. According to Rollins, Reigns has always craved validation, and that’s exactly what’s happening now.
“‘Acknowledge me.’ He’s always looking for that acknowledgement. I think part of him needs to think that that’s the way it is. He needs to believe that.”
Rollins didn’t stop there. He questioned whether Reigns actually believes what he’s saying before reminding everyone how far back their rivalry goes. Rollins even claimed he was the one who helped elevate Reigns when The Shield first arrived in WWE.
“Whether he actually thinks that or not I don’t know because the truth is I’ve had Roman’s number every step of the way. From the moment we came into The Shield where I held his hand, nursed him along, helped him out and got him to the next level, to every single match we’ve had in a big-time moment, I’ve owned him.”
For Rollins, the trash talk isn’t about facts. He believes it’s simply part of the story Reigns has to keep telling himself.
“So whether he believes that or not I’m not entirely sure, but he’s got to tell himself that to be happy with who he is.”
The comments add even more fuel to one of WWE’s longest-running rivalries. With the World Heavyweight Championship on the line, neither man is holding back as SummerSlam gets closer, and it doesn’t sound like either is interested in taking the high road.
Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins are set to collide for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2026 on August 1 and 2 from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If this war of words is any indication, things are only going to get more personal before they finally step into the ring.
