Rusev is pulling back the curtain on one of WWE’s most controversial relationship storylines — and according to him, it was always supposed to end on the biggest stage possible.
During his appearance on Chris Van Vliet’s interview, Rusev opened up about the explosive angle involving Lana and Bobby Lashley, including the shocking wedding segments and weeks of on-screen betrayal. While fans remember the chaos, Rusev says there was a clear long-term destination. When asked how the storyline was originally pitched to him, he didn’t hesitate.
“Oh, WrestleMania match. That’s how it was pitched to me. I said, ‘Great. I can deal with it.’”
That was the plan — build the emotional drama and pay it off at WrestleMania. Instead, the COVID-19 pandemic and WWE’s subsequent roster cuts ended the program before it could reach that final chapter. Rusev admitted the storyline wasn’t necessarily his personal favorite, but he understood the structure and where it was headed.
“It was a good story, man. Like I understood the story. It was not like it’s my favorite story, but I understood it. And when they told me what the final goal was, I said, ‘All right, that sounds good to me.’ You know, we have a direction, we have a dip, we have a comeback, we have a good story to finish it.”
Instead of a WrestleMania grudge match, the angle abruptly stopped when Rusev was released during the pandemic era. What was meant to be a redemption arc on the grandest stage never materialized.
Looking back, it’s clear Rusev saw the bigger picture. The betrayal, the wedding segments, the chaos — it was all meant to fuel a massive comeback moment.
