Roman Reigns is already getting some serious mileage out of his Street Fighter role before the movie even hits theaters. The WWE World Heavyweight Champion has stepped into full Akuma mode for a new commercial campaign from The General Insurance, giving fans an early taste of what “The OTC” is bringing to the big screen.

Reigns, who plays Akuma in the upcoming Street Fighter movie, appears in The General’s new “Give People a Break” campaign built around the idea that dealing with car insurance shouldn’t feel like fighting one of the most dangerous characters in the Street Fighter universe.

The ad puts Reigns in character as Akuma and leans directly into the fighter’s intimidating reputation while turning everyday insurance headaches into the punchline. The campaign is tied to the upcoming Street Fighter film, which is set to hit theaters on October 16 and also features Cody Rhodes as Guile.

The General says the entire concept was built around taking something normally stressful and dropping it into the middle of Street Fighter’s over-the-top battle world. Chauncey Citchens, director of marketing at The General Insurance, explained why the crossover made sense.

“At The General, giving people a break isn’t just something we say. It’s the lens we use to think about how we can make insurance easier for our customers.”

Citchens said Street Fighter gave the company a way to make that message a lot more fun.

“Partnering with ‘Street Fighter’ gives us a fun, culturally relevant way to bring that story to life. In a world built around epic battles, we can show drivers that getting the service and rates they deserve shouldn’t have to feel like one.”

Reigns is also doing more than simply showing up as himself for the commercial. The campaign specifically uses his Akuma character, creating a direct bridge between WWE, Street Fighter and The General. Reigns said that crossover was exactly what made the commercial appealing.

“While WWE fans acknowledge their Tribal Chief, they and ‘Street Fighter’ fans are about to be introduced to a very different side of me as Akuma.”

“That’s what made this spot with The General so much fun. We get to bring these different worlds together.”

The campaign also strengthens The General’s existing relationship with WWE, where the company already serves as WWE’s premier insurance sponsor. That gives Reigns a pretty natural lane to go from WWE centerpiece to Hollywood villain and straight into a national advertising campaign without ever really leaving the wrestling ecosystem.

The new spots will roll out across television, digital and social media, giving fans plenty of chances to see Reigns in Akuma mode before Street Fighter arrives in theaters.

Reigns has spent years telling WWE fans to acknowledge him, but now they’re about to see a very different version of the Tribal Chief. If this commercial is the warm-up, Akuma could end up being one of the biggest departures yet from the Roman Reigns persona fans know from WWE.

What do you think of Roman Reigns as Akuma, and do you think the Street Fighter role could open the door for even more major movie projects? Let us know your thoughts and feedback in the comments.
