Ric Flair’s always stylin’ and profilin’ and truly living the gimmick, but now the Nature Boy’s admitted that living the gimmick had its fair share of downsides.
While speaking to Clay Edwards, Ric Flair admitted that living his gimmick hasn’t always been the best way to live, even leading to him forgetting to pay his taxes for a couple of years.
“Living the gimmick… living the gimmick has not always been the ideal way to live. I forgot to pay my taxes for a couple of years. So I live in my gimmick.”
When asked if he enjoys being himself, Flair said that he does. He explained that 99% of the people he meets are nice, with only the occasional person being drunk or overly familiar in a way he doesn’t like, such as putting an arm around him without warning.
The Nature Boy added that for the most part, his experiences with people are overwhelmingly positive. He even pointed to a recent night at Martin’s where everyone was incredibly friendly, which he says is typical wherever he goes.
“Oh, yeah, I do. I don’t have a problem. 99% of everybody I meet now is nice. You’re only once in a while going to find somebody that’s either drunk or, you know, wants to be too familiar. Like, I don’t like people coming up and putting their arm around me if I’m not aware of it and stuff like that.
But otherwise, I mean, like last night at Martin’s, everybody was so damn nice. I mean, over-the-top nice. And that’s pretty much what I experience everywhere I go. People are very friendly.”
The Nature Boy is well aware of all the drawbacks of living the gimmick but it’s clear he is still happy with how his life has been so far. Therefore, we’ll have to see what’s next in store for Flair since he obviously has a lot of business ventures he wants to establish.
Should wrestling legends separate their real lives from their on-screen personas or is “living the gimmick” part of what makes them great? Sound off in the comments.
