Rey Mysterio isn’t done making history—because he’s reportedly headed back to AAA for a clash that could get extremely personal.
Veteran lucha libre journalist Eduardo Bates revealed on his YouTube channel that Rey Mysterio is set to face Dominik Mysterio at AAA’s Guerra de Titanes event on December 20. Even bigger—this father-versus-son battle is expected to be for the AAA Mega Championship.
According to Bates, the match is coming together for a massive showdown, though it’s unclear if Rey will walk out as champion.
“Rey Mysterio was announced for Guerra de Titanes. I can tell you he is expected to face Dominik there for the AAA Mega Championship.”
While speaking about the upcoming match, Bates added that Rey winning the title would carry major emotional weight, especially given the history between the two.
“I don’t know if Rey will take the Mega Championship at Guerra de Titanes; that would be very interesting and very beautiful. At one point Dominik told Rey Mysterio, ‘You’ve never won the Mega Championship,’ so it’s possible Rey takes it from him and the story develops from there.”
This match comes on the heels of WWE scrapping plans for Rey vs. Dominik at Survivor Series later this month. Instead, Dominik will now face John Cena for the WWE Intercontinental Championship in San Diego—while Rey looks set to make his mark south of the border in AAA.
A potential title win at Guerra de Titanes would not only silence Dominik’s jab about his father never holding the AAA Mega Championship—it could also mark one of the most powerful moments in lucha libre storytelling. The father-son rivalry is far from over, and this chapter might be the most emotional yet.
