Rey Mysterio apparently wanted El Fiscal in WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship picture. The Hall of Famer reportedly pushed behind the scenes for the AAA star to get a spot in the Number One Contender’s Tournament—and WWE went with it.
According to False Finish, Mysterio personally advocated for Fiscal to be included in the tournament before the August 17 episode of Monday Night RAW.
That put Fiscal across the ring from AAA World Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix with a chance to move one step closer to a World Heavyweight Championship match. Fiscal certainly didn’t get thrown out there just to make up the numbers.
He gave Fenix plenty of problems throughout the match, including going after his left knee once Fenix started favoring it. Fiscal picked up several near falls and kept Fenix on the defensive before the Cruiserweight Champion finally started putting together a comeback.
Fenix eventually caught Fiscal with a superkick before planting him with the Mexican Muscle Buster for the three-count. So Fiscal didn’t make it out of the first round. But apparently, getting there in the first place came with a pretty significant endorsement.
Mysterio has spent decades becoming one of the biggest lucha libre stars WWE has ever had, and he apparently saw enough in Fiscal to go to bat for him when WWE was putting together its World Heavyweight Championship tournament.
Fiscal couldn’t turn that opportunity into a win over Fenix, but having Rey Mysterio pushing to get you onto RAW isn’t exactly a bad person to have in your corner.
