Bron Breakker was in line to win the 2026 Royal Rumble, but WWE backed off because officials were afraid fans would turn on him.
Season three of WWE Unreal revealed the company’s real concern behind the decision. WWE liked Breakker as a future main-event star, but creative feared that handing him the Rumble win and quickly pushing him toward the World Heavyweight Championship would feel forced.
WWE Vice President of Creative Writing Jonathan Baeckstrone initially believed winning the Rumble would give Breakker a natural path into WrestleMania 42.
“Heading into WrestleMania, Breakker winning the Rumble and going into WrestleMania as the challenger feels like a more organic build for him.”
Triple H immediately raised questions about whether Breakker was ready for that spotlight and, more importantly, whether the WWE audience would accept him in the role.
“The risk with Bron Breakker is everything from: Can he actually do it? Can he mentally handle it? Will fans accept it? You have to really be sure.”
WWE Vice President of Creative Writing Ryan Ward argued that the Royal Rumble could have been the moment that officially turned Breakker into a top star.
“The Royal Rumble was a star-making moment for him to win and get where we need to go.”
The problem was what came next. WWE’s original direction would have had Breakker win the Rumble and eventually capture the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. Creative worried that moving that fast would make it look like the company was forcing him on fans. Baeckstrone admitted that the planned title push was starting to feel too aggressive.
“For whatever reason, him winning the title immediately feels to me like we’re just kind of shoving him down your throat.”
Triple H agreed. While a Breakker victory could have created a major surprise, he feared it could also create the wrong kind of reaction.
“I think you can make a shocking moment out of it, but I still worry a little bit that it feels like you’re just shoving him down your throat.”
That concern carried obvious shades of Roman Reigns’ infamous 2015 Royal Rumble win. Reigns was booed out of the building after fans felt WWE was pushing him ahead of stars they wanted to see in the WrestleMania main event.
WWE didn’t want Breakker walking into the same trap. The plan also took another hit when Seth Rollins suffered a shoulder injury, forcing WWE to reshuffle the WrestleMania 42 card. Once that happened, the Royal Rumble decision came down to Roman Reigns or Cody Rhodes, and WWE went with Reigns.
Breakker entered the match at No. 2 but barely lasted. A masked attacker hit him with a stomp outside the ring, allowing Oba Femi to eliminate him almost immediately. That attack later became part of Breakker’s storyline with Rollins.
WWE still clearly sees Breakker as a future top guy. They just didn’t want his biggest win to come before fans were ready to accept him.
