El Hijo del Vikingo was supposed to defend the AAA Latin American Championship on NXT this week, but WWE had to scrap the match after a real injury scare.

Vikingo was advertised for the June 30 episode of NXT on The CW, where he was set to put his title on the line against E.K. Prosper. Instead, WWE showed Keanu Carver standing over an injured Vikingo backstage, with Carver saying Prosper no longer had a title shot before walking off.

That was the TV explanation. The real story is that Vikingo got hurt while preparing for the match. According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, WWE pulled him from the show so he could be evaluated rather than risk sending him out there.

WWE then pivoted quickly. Robert Stone called for medical help, later told Carver the Vikingo vs. Prosper match was off, and booked Carver against Prosper instead. Prosper still got a match on the show and ended up beating Carver later that night.

So this was not just a random creative switch. Vikingo’s title defense was taken off the board because WWE wanted to play it safe after he suffered an injury while getting ready for the bout.
