Paul Heyman has apparently taken a personal interest in helping Sol Ruca add another weapon to her game. While Ruca can already do things in the ring that very few wrestlers would even attempt, Heyman has recently been working with her on the part she admits still needs work—promos.
While speaking on the Pod Meets World podcast, Ruca revealed that she’s been talking with Heyman and getting his help with her character and speaking ability. That has included Heyman deliberately putting her into situations she normally wouldn’t be comfortable with.
“I’ve been talking to Paul Heyman recently, and he’s been helping me a lot with, like, promos and stuff. And he’s been kind of pushing me out of my comfort zone and making me do things that I normally wouldn’t do.”
Ruca didn’t hide the fact that the process has been working for her either: “He’s been a lot of help.” One of Heyman’s lessons apparently started with an envelope. Ruca was given one ahead of a backstage promo and instructed not to open it until she was with Heyman, naturally leaving her expecting to find something inside that she would need to learn. When she finally opened it, there wasn’t a script waiting for her. There wasn’t anything written on it at all.
“It was just a blank piece of paper.”
Heyman asked what she could do with that blank page. Ruca answered that she could put whatever she wanted on it, which was exactly where he had been trying to take her.
“He’s like, ‘Exactly.’ He’s like, ‘You need to, like, separate yourself from, like, the verbiage and from the character and just, like, you know, more so just, like, feel it and just, like, kind of just embody the character a little bit more.’”
Instead of teaching Ruca another set of lines, Heyman was trying to get her away from worrying about the words in the first place. For someone still developing that side of her WWE game, having one of wrestling’s most accomplished talkers personally pushing her out of her comfort zone certainly isn’t a bad person to learn from.
