Myles Borne and Stephanie Vaquer come from completely different language backgrounds, but Borne says that has never really been a problem in their relationship. If anything, watching Vaquer work on her English has left him seriously impressed.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Myles Borne addressed the language barrier that might come with dating Vaquer and immediately pushed back on the idea that communicating has been difficult for them.
“The way she studies so hard and works so hard on her English—she’s very smart and knows multiple languages. There was never a problem there. Her English is fantastic.”
Borne said Vaquer can actually be harder on herself than anyone else. She wants to get everything exactly right, and he’s seen her become frustrated when she feels like her English isn’t perfect.
“I know she’s gotten frustrated with trying to make sure she did everything perfectly because she wants to do everything to the best of her abilities.”
At one point, Borne finally told her that she probably doesn’t realize just how good her English already is. He used himself as the example.
“I once told her, ‘You don’t even realize how good your English is. I’ve lived here for 28 years, and I still mispronounce words. I have a speech impediment. People don’t understand my English. I don’t care what anyone says, your English is amazing.’”
That appreciation goes beyond simply being able to speak the language. Borne said he’s amazed by how well Vaquer remembers things and carries conversations despite English not being her first language.
“The way she remembers things and holds conversations is incredible to me.”
Borne also has his own reason for understanding how difficult language can be. Growing up hearing impaired meant he had to put extra work into recognizing syllables and pronouncing words correctly, so learning another language isn’t something he takes lightly.
“As a hearing-impaired kid, I understood that one language alone is tough enough because we don’t hear all the syllables, so we work overtime trying to pronounce words correctly.”
That’s also why anyone asking whether he’s picked up Spanish from Vaquer probably shouldn’t expect him to suddenly start firing off fluent conversations.
“So if someone asks, ‘Hey, have you learned Spanish?’ I’m struggling already with English, and I understand you there. She came here, took it by the horns, and ran with it.”
Borne previously revealed that he was so nervous around Vaquer when they first liked each other that he once turned around and skipped catering rather than talk to her. Months later, he’s comfortable enough to talk publicly about their relationship—and clearly has a lot of respect for the work she’s put into adapting to life in the United States.
