Mick Foley thought two fans had just dropped £900 on his shirts for a good cause. Instead, Foley says they got the shirts signed, took photos with him and then ran out of his Birmingham comedy show without paying a penny.
The whole thing happened during Foley’s usual “shirt off my back” charity auction, where fans bid on the clothes he’s wearing and the money goes to the Cauliflower Alley Club. This time, two fans won Foley’s T-shirt and outer shirt with a massive £900 bid, and Foley was thrilled with how much they had seemingly raised.
Then the two guys disappeared. Foley took to his Instagram story and said he has a pretty good idea who they are, and apparently so do plenty of other people who were in the building. He’s giving them a couple of days to fix the situation before he decides what comes next.
“I would like to address those two guys that chose to run. You know who you are. We know who you are. And we’re going to give you a couple of days to do the right thing.”
Foley isn’t even asking them to somehow find the entire £900 anymore. At this point, he says returning the shirts would be enough to start making things right, although a donation would certainly help.
“At the very least, you return the shirt. It would be really nice if you made a donation. I don’t expect £900, that’s a lot of money.”
There may have been another factor behind that huge bid too. Foley suggested alcohol might have played a role and had some pretty straightforward advice for anyone tempted to make promises they can’t actually keep.
“Maybe you guys shouldn’t do that when you’re drinking. Maybe you shouldn’t make promises that you can’t keep.”
The bigger problem for the two fans is that this apparently wasn’t something they pulled off unnoticed. Foley says there were cameras all over the place, so continuing to ignore him could result in a lot more people finding out exactly who they are.
“But if you don’t do something — some small way of atoning — not only will you know who you are, and not only will I know who you are, but a lot of people will know who you are. Because there were cameras everywhere.”
Foley doubled down on that point in the caption attached to his Instagram video. He said they have footage of the two men and plenty of witnesses who saw what happened, meaning this could become a much bigger headache for them if they don’t make things right.
At least the Cauliflower Alley Club didn’t completely lose out because of what happened. Foley said three or four other people stepped up with donations afterward, helping him raise around $600 despite the £900 winning bid disappearing out the door.
That matters because these auctions aren’t just something Foley does for fun at his shows. He says they’ve raised more than $40,000 for the Cauliflower Alley Club, with the money helping wrestlers and former wrestlers who have fallen on hard times or need financial assistance. So Foley isn’t asking for much at this point. Bring the shirts back, make some kind of donation and put an end to a pretty ridiculous situation before those cameras potentially do it for them.
