Former WWE and WCW star Marc Mero is opening up about one of the darkest chapters of his life, revealing that his struggles with drug addiction nearly cost him everything long before he found success outside the ring.
While speaking with Jasmin St. Claire on the Krazy Train Podcast, Mero spoke in detail about his past addiction and the terrifying moments when he overdosed. He admitted that cocaine was his primary drug of choice and described how repeated overdoses left him dangerously close to death.
“My drug of choice was cocaine and my turning point was you know, I overdosed on three occasions where I should have been dead. I mean, realistically. I remember that being with a bunch of friends and partying and then getting to point where, you know, we're sitting in in like a living room and you're you know, you watch the sun go down and then you watch the neighbors go to work, you watch the neighbors come home, you watch the sun go down and you haven't slept yet, you know? And I remember that I eventually just overdosed and the next thing I know it was the next morning and my friends all thought I died. And the saddest part was is that you know, nobody called an ambulance and and and the reason being is cuz nobody wanted to get arrested, you know? I mean, think of the position that we're all in. We're wasted, you know, we're drugs all over the place and and it was really a place where I'm just going I'm going to die from this stuff, you know?”
Mero explained that while those overdoses were terrifying, the true breaking point came when his life spiraled into financial ruin and emotional collapse. He described losing money through gambling, battling substance abuse, and feeling completely alone after his personal life fell apart.
During the conversation, Mero recalled the exact moment he realized how far things had gone and how hopeless he felt at the time.
“But my real turning point I I and I got to be really honest was um when I I didn't want to be here anymore, Jasmine. I got to the point where my life got so out of control and I think maybe someone listening to this has felt that way where they just felt hopeless, you know? And that's that's where I got to. I just had no hope. Um you know, recently divorced at time, life's out of control, drugs, alcohol, just living a horrible life. Lost all the money I I saved when I was a professional wrestling through gambling and doing just ridiculous things. And uh it was when I wanted to end my life and I I remember I just eventually just got down on my knees and I asked Christ into my life and I just and I didn't even know what I was going to do, Jasmine. It was one of those things where here I am broke and and alone and I didn't know how I didn't know how I was going to make money, I didn't know what I was going to do. And my whole life changed.”
Mero has since turned his life around and built a second career as a motivational speaker, sharing his story with students across the country. His experience with addiction, financial collapse, and emotional struggles became the foundation of his message about making better choices and rebuilding after hitting rock bottom.
Looking back, Mero’s story stands as a reminder of how quickly life can spiral out of control, even for someone who would later achieve success in professional wrestling and beyond. His willingness to speak openly about those moments shows just how close he came to losing everything before finding a new direction.
