Lil Yachty knew wrestling fans could be tough when he started working with WWE. What he apparently didn’t expect was to get blamed every time somebody disappeared from the roster.
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Yachty admitted that while he has managed to win over some WWE fans, the criticism hasn’t disappeared. One complaint in particular keeps finding its way onto his timeline: WWE is supposedly cutting wrestlers because of the money being spent on him.
“I have, and I find that awesome because, bro, they were mean as fuck, and they are still mean as f***. Don’t get it twisted. They still fucking hate. They be like, ‘Man, this s*** like this, where you’re wasting TV time on…’ And then they also assume that, like, they’re cut. For some reason, wrestlers are getting cut to pay me.”
Yachty wants that theory killed immediately. He laughed off the idea that his WWE paycheck is somehow large enough that the company needs to clear wrestlers off the books to cover it.
“That’s not happening, guys. They’re not cutting wrestlers to pay my bills. I promise I’m not getting paid that much. I don’t want you to think that all these fantastic wrestlers are getting cut to pay my salary. That’s not the case.”
Ilja Dragunov is one of the names Yachty has repeatedly seen dragged into the argument. Fans have apparently blamed him for Dragunov’s departure specifically, something Yachty made clear he had absolutely nothing to do with.
“I just want to put that out there, because all the time I’ll see, like, ‘You cut Dragunov for Yachty,’ or something like that. Hey, hey, I have nothing to do with that.”
There isn’t any bad blood with Dragunov from Yachty’s side either. In fact, he’s a fan. Yachty remembered regularly seeing Dragunov backstage but never approaching him because Dragunov always looked so serious that he wasn’t sure how the conversation would go. Trick Williams’ wedding finally gave him his opening.
“By the way, Dragunov’s an amazing wrestler. I told him that at Trick’s wedding, because I always saw him in the hallways and I never said anything to him because he just always looked so serious and, like, aggressive. But I told him at Trick’s wedding, I was like, ‘Bro, you are a fantastic worker, man.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, bro. His s*** looks aggressive.’”
Yachty can handle wrestling fans not wanting him on their television. He just doesn’t want somebody else losing their WWE job added to his list of alleged crimes, especially when he says his paycheck isn’t anywhere near big enough to start clearing out the locker room.
