Miss Elizabeth was a key part of Randy Savage’s legacy in WWE, and her tragic passing remains a topic of discussion in the wrestling world. Lex Luger, who was closely linked to her during her final years, has now taken responsibility for her passing.
Elizabeth tragically passed away on May 1, 2003, at the age of 42 due to acute toxicity. Luger was the one who called 9-1-1, reporting that she was not breathing. Her death was ruled an overdose caused by a mix of drugs and alcohol.
For years, many have blamed Luger due to their troubled relationship, which included a reported domestic dispute weeks before her passing. Although foul play was initially suspected, her death was ultimately ruled accidental, and no one was charged with murder. However, Luger was arrested and charged with felony drug possession.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Lex Luger talked about how his past lifestyle may have played a role in Miss Elizabeth’s death. Luger denied killing Miss Elizabeth but admitted he did play a part in her passing.
Luger’s reckless lifestyle, combined with her constant presence around him, ultimately led to her overdose. He took responsibility, recognizing that there are always consequences to such a way of living, and unfortunately, she was part of that.
Luger explained that he was partying at a very high level, and Elizabeth, being much smaller, couldn’t handle it the same way.
“The tragic passing of Elizabeth—people say, ‘Well, he killed Elizabeth.’ Well, I didn’t kill her. But was I a contributing factor to the lifestyle I was living, with her being around me all the time, and then she overdosed? Absolutely.
Absolutely, I take responsibility. Sure, there’s always collateral damage to lifestyles like that, and she was part of it. So absolutely—sadly. The level I was partying at, and she was so much smaller.”
Even after she passed away, Lex Luger didn’t see it as his lowest point right away. Instead of fully mourning her, he was more focused on how it would affect his career, which he now regrets.
“I hate to admit it, but who I was back then— instead of grieving over the loss of Liz, I was grieving over what this would do to me and my career.”
Lex Luger also believes Miss Elizabeth’s passing might have blocked his entry into the WWE Hall of Fame. Regardless, Lex Luger will forever feel he had a role to play in Miss Elizabeth’s passing and that’s never changing, but many fans have forgiven him for this now.
