Layla is finally setting the record straight about one of the funniest and most talked-about moments from her WWE career.
During an appearance on TMZ’s Inside the Ring, the former WWE Women’s Champion was asked about the viral clip that has circulated among wrestling fans for years. In the moment, Layla appeared to tap out to AJ Lee by slapping AJ directly on the backside instead of making a traditional submission tap.
As it turns out, there was no grand plan behind it. Layla admitted the entire thing happened because she was joking around with AJ and completely forgot WWE cameras were capturing every second of it. When asked if the spot was intentional or if she was simply tapping wherever she could reach, Layla took full responsibility. Layla then revealed what was actually happening during the submission.
“No, it was my fault. Sometimes when I was out there, I’ll just speak for myself, I’d forget the camera’s on and I thought that nobody would see that.”
“I was just squeezing her butt, like messing with her.”
According to Layla, the moment wasn’t meant for television at all. She was simply trying to make AJ Lee break character and laugh during the closing moments of the match.
“I was just trying to mess with her, like to make her laugh at the end. But I didn’t know. My mistake. My bad.”
Layla has been opening up about her wrestling career lately as she returns to conventions and launches her new podcast focused on celebrating the WWE Divas era. With stories like this finally coming out years later, it’s easy to see why fans are eager to hear more from her.
