Lash Legend doesn’t need to read the comments to know what people are saying. That lesson didn’t come from WWE—it came years earlier, after one basketball game changed the way she uses social media forever.
Speaking with Stephanie McMahon on What’s Your Story?, Lash admitted she was so confident when she first started wrestling that she completely misunderstood why she was trending online after her early NXT matches.
“So I thought like my first couple matches I did so good. I was like, ‘Oh, I killed.’ Yeah. And so I was trending for weeks, but it wasn’t for positive things. Right. And I thought, like, I was like, ‘Oh, they love me.’ But I truly come to find out after the fact, I was like, ‘Oh, they was talking a lot of s*** about me.’ But I didn’t really realize it. I just thought I was popping so much.”
That experience didn’t bother her nearly as much as what she’d already gone through during her basketball career. Lash explained that she’s had notifications turned off on her phone for years because of what happened after she missed a potential game-winning shot. Lash revealed she got a ton of death threats.
“Since basketball, at least for me, I’ve always had my social media, like none of my notifications come to my phone… I had a double-double. I did a lot of great things. Okay? Okay? I still got the rebounding record at NCAA. I was good, but I did miss a game winner. Oh, those fans turn on you so quick. Ooh. Death threats. Like, it was crazy. So that’s really what made me, whoa. Yeah. They, they were crazy.”
Lash said that was the moment she realized she wasn’t going to let social media control her day anymore. Rather than constantly seeing every notification the second it came in, she simply shut them all off and never looked back.
“From that point on, I said, ‘Oh no, I’m not dealing with this.’ So I turned off all my notifications. So it has been off for years… Almost a decade.”
Now it’s advice she gives to other people too. Lash believes social media is addictive enough without your phone constantly demanding your attention, and she’d rather decide when she wants to open an app than let every comment interrupt her day.
“Turn the notification off. What, what do you need it for? Like, you’re just… and then social media is already so addicting. You catch yourself just doom scrolling anyway. But if you really get those notifications every single time, you’re picking up your phone every time. Like, ‘Oh my gosh, this person’s crazy. Said this, this person said this.’ Like, no, no, no, no, no… Turn off the notifications off your phone. When you get, when you open the app, you can do whatever. But yeah. At least limit yourself.”
Lash’s confidence may have convinced her that fans loved her when she first got to WWE, but she’d already learned years earlier that living through every reaction online just isn’t worth it. These days, she’d rather focus on what’s happening in real life than whatever happens to be blowing up on her phone.
