Kofi Kingston is making moves to lock down his name and a new set of initials, filing two new trademark applications that cover everything from wrestling appearances to merchandise and wrestling news.
On August 11, Kofi filed trademark applications for “KSM” and “Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah,” his real name. Both filings cover apparel as well as a wide range of professional wrestling and entertainment services. For merchandise, the filings specifically cover shirts, sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts, hats, bandanas and socks.
The entertainment side of the filing is much broader, covering wrestling performances, appearances, interviews and even providing wrestling news and information online.
“Providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer; Entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests.”
The filing also protects the names for televised appearances, personal appearances and live appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer. Kofi also included online interviews involving professional wrestling and sports entertainment in the applications.
“Entertainment services, namely, televised appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, personal appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, live appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer.”
“Providing online interviews featuring professional wrestler and sports entertainer in the field of professional wrestling and sports entertainment for entertainment purposes.”
The “KSM” filing is especially interesting because the initials match Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah, potentially giving him a shortened brand that can be used across merchandise, wrestling appearances and other projects.
For now, the filings simply show that Kofi is taking steps to protect both his real name and “KSM” for use inside and outside the wrestling business. Exactly what he plans to do with them remains to be seen.
