John Cena says modern WWE has simply become too physically demanding for him at this stage of his life.
While appearing on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, Cena opened up about why he walked away from in-ring competition and admitted age finally caught up with him physically after decades inside WWE.
“I’m 49, I have given my physical best to WWE. The product is so fast, and time’s undefeated.”
Cena explained that he never wanted to stay around long enough for fans to watch him become a watered-down version of himself in the ring. He then reflected on something he promised years ago during the peak of his career.
“Rather than hang around and put out a product that I feel might be less to our consumer, I made a promise to our fans.”
“When I’m a step slower, it’s time to go. That’s happened, and it’s time to go.”
Cena officially retired from active wrestling competition after losing to Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025. Even though he’s no longer wrestling, Cena has remained heavily involved with WWE in other ways. He hosted WrestleMania 42, later appeared at WWE Backlash to announce the John Cena Classic, and continues working behind the scenes scouting developmental talent while helping promote Club WWE.
At this point, Cena sounds fully at peace with the idea that his body simply can’t keep up with the speed and physicality of today’s WWE product anymore.
Do you think modern WWE has become harder on wrestlers physically than previous eras, or is this just the natural reality of getting older in the business? Leave your thoughts and feedback in the comments below.
