John Cena isn’t changing his stance on Vince McMahon. Even after everything that’s happened over the past few years, Cena says he has no shame about remaining friends with the former WWE chairman.
Speaking to The Guardian, Cena was asked about his relationship with McMahon after the profile touched on how important Vince had been to his WWE career. The article described McMahon as more than just Cena’s boss, saying he was a mentor who helped launch his career and became a father figure during the years they spent working together. Rather than trying to distance himself from McMahon, Cena made it clear he still stands by their friendship.
“I have no guilt nor shame about my friendship and my relationship with Vince McMahon.”
The 17-time World Champion also knew that quote would be the one everyone focused on, joking with the interviewer that it would almost certainly make the final story.
“You’re obviously going to put this in [your] article.”
According to the profile, Cena believes it’s possible to care about someone while recognizing that they aren’t perfect. That’s ultimately how he views his relationship with McMahon, and he doesn’t feel the need to apologize for it.
“It’s OK to love somebody when they’re not perfect.”
McMahon faced a lawsuit accusing him of sex trafficking, misconduct, and directing former employee Janel Grant to engage in non-consensual sexual acts with others in the company. The scandal forced McMahon to resign from both WWE and TKO Holdings in early 2024.
Love it or hate it, Cena wasn’t trying to give a safe answer here. He knew the topic would make headlines, but instead of sidestepping it, he doubled down on how he feels about one of the most important relationships of his career.
