Joe Hendry has WWE fans singing his name every week, but what if he decided to give them a reason to boo instead? Hendry was just asked about turning heel, and his answer came with a pretty surprising confession about his character.

During a new interview discussing his WWE career, Hendry was asked whether he’d ever consider ditching his fan-favorite act and becoming a bad guy. He didn’t rule anything out.

“Interesting question. Yes. I I mean never say never. You just never know. Anything can happen in the WWE.”

But here’s where things get interesting. Hendry revealed that the character fans love today wasn’t even supposed to be popular. He actually created the whole thing with the intention of making people dislike him.

“It’s funny. I originally my this is the character that I’ve designed and the the person that I like that I’m portraying was was designed to be hated and people just happen to like it, you know.”

That’s right. The entrance music, the confidence, and the whole Joe Hendry act were originally meant to get under people’s skin. Instead, fans started cheering, singing along, and turning him into one of wrestling’s most recognizable personalities.

Hendry admitted that the reaction wasn’t what he originally had in mind.

“I guess that that’s always intriguing. Yeah. I mean like it’s it was absolutely designed to be hated by everyone and people just liked it.”

And according to Hendry, that’s just how wrestling works sometimes. You can create a character with one reaction in mind, but the fans ultimately decide whether they’re going to cheer or boo.

“You can’t you can’t force it. Like the the audience are going to like you say they’re a huge part in dictating our paths.”

Hendry also made it clear that he knows exactly how important those fans have been to his career. He even credited their support for getting him opportunities at WrestleMania and the Royal Rumble.

“Well, they’re they’re a huge part of the show. They’re as big a part of the show as as the performers. So, you know, to have the fan support, you know, I wouldn’t be here without the fan support. I got the Wrestlemania opportunity. I got the Royal Rumble opportunity because of the fan support. So, ultimately, I’m always grateful to the fans because it’s them that are putting me in these positions.”

For now, Hendry isn’t saying a heel turn is coming, and WWE hasn’t announced anything suggesting a character change. But considering he originally built the character to be hated, it wouldn’t exactly be unfamiliar territory for him. The funny part is that Hendry spent years trying to get fans to hate his character, only for them to turn him into a star. Now the question is whether WWE will ever give him the chance to play the bad guy he originally wanted to be.
