Joe Gacy doesn’t believe the Wyatt Sicks failed because they ran out of ideas. He believes WWE stopped listening. Months after the Wyatt Sicks were released, Gacy says the group’s biggest problem wasn’t a lack of ideas—it was getting WWE to use them.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Joe Gacy explained that the faction started off with plenty of momentum before things gradually changed, which is why there was frustration in the group.
“I think there was a level of frustration with a lot of us in the group. At first things started great, things were strong. They seemed like they had a lot behind us. Things were rolling for a while, and then somewhere along the way, I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if they lost faith in us or if something happened where they just didn’t feel like it was working anymore or anything.”
Instead of sitting around waiting for direction, Gacy says the Wyatt Sicks kept trying to create their own. Every week, the group came up with fresh ideas. Every week, they pitched them to WWE’s writers. According to Gacy, almost none of them ever turned into television.
“I think the level of frustration was we, every week we would have something, we would have an idea, a pitch for them, and we would tell them. We would talk to writers all the time. We would give them all these ideas. Nothing ever happened of the ideas. Some people would be like, ‘Yeah, that sounds cool,’ and then that was it.”
Joe Gacy also wishes he had been given more opportunities to speak instead of remaining largely silent as part of the faction.
“So I think there was just a level of frustration and confusion on the way they used us in certain areas on the show. In my opinion, I wish I had the opportunity to speak a little more being in the group.”
Looking back, Gacy admits that months of creative frustration completely changed how he reacted when WWE finally released the group. Rather than feeling only disappointment, part of him actually felt relieved.
“I think just the level of frustration… it was almost like a relief a little bit. Honestly, getting hired in 2020, it was always in the back of my head. There was always that thought, ‘What’s going to happen the day I get released?’ Because everybody does eventually.”
He said the uncertainty surrounding the Wyatt Sicks had become mentally exhausting, making the release feel like a weight had finally been lifted.
“So I think it was a little bit of a relief, a little bit of a weight taken off me, I guess, because the position we were in was a little strange for us, even for creative. I think it was just little miscommunications here and there, not figuring out the right way to use us, whatever it is exactly. So I think it was just a little bit of a relief.”
The Wyatt Sicks were released together as part of WWE’s roster cuts back in April, bringing the faction to an abrupt end. From Gacy’s perspective, though, the group’s downfall started well before that day. He says the Wyatt Sicks never stopped bringing ideas to the table—they just couldn’t get WWE to believe in them the way they did.
