Jim Ross knows his AEW contract is almost up, and for the first time, Good Ol’ JR has openly admitted the end may already be here.
Speaking on Grilling JR, the legendary announcer reflected on his future while discussing his ongoing health issues, revealing that he isn’t expecting anything and would completely understand if AEW decides it’s time to move on. Ross first revealed that he’ll soon undergo another medical procedure as part of his continued health battle.
“I’ve been battling some health issues. You know, I’m getting a shunt put in my brain on Wednesday, so we’ll see how that works out, no pun intended.”
That led naturally into the topic of his wrestling future. With his AEW contract set to expire this month, Ross admitted he believes his run behind the commentary desk may be coming to an end.
“I’ve had a unique life and I realize that it’s coming to an end. I get it. If you ask me, ‘JR, how much longer do you think you’re gonna do announcing?’ Well, I think my contract’s up this month, and so… I’m done. Just pretty much.”
Ross made it clear that retiring isn’t what he wants. But he’s also not going to fight whatever decision Tony Khan makes. After everything wrestling has given him over the past five decades, Ross says he simply can’t ask for more.
“I don’t want to be done, but if Tony Khan said, ‘JR, thanks for the efforts and thanks for being here and all that stuff,’ then I’d have no problem with that…Because what else? How can I be such a greedy bastard and want more in my career than I’ve already received?”
Looking back, Jim Ross said he considers himself incredibly fortunate to have spent his life calling professional wrestling.
“Sometimes you get summoned along to a great job and a great career. And my career as a wrestling broadcaster has been nothing but wonderful.”
Back in May, Ross said he planned to let his AEW contract situation play out naturally rather than worrying about it. Now, with his deal expiring and another surgery ahead of him, the WWE Hall of Famer sounds prepared for whatever comes next.
