Ilja Dragunov has finally explained why he completely disappeared from WWE television during the final four months of his contract. Despite all the speculation surrounding his absence, Dragunov says the reality was much simpler — WWE didn’t have creative for him, he waited for another opportunity, and eventually his contract negotiations went nowhere.

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Dragunov was specifically asked why fans didn’t see him on WWE television between his final match in April and his contract expiring in August. Dragunov admitted the real explanation probably isn’t nearly as exciting as some of the theories that popped up while he was gone.

“Again, everything I can say is not as exciting as people made it. Of course, at some point in time, you don’t have creative — you’re just waiting for the next opportunities to come.”

Dragunov believes part of the problem was simply how crowded WWE had become. New wrestlers were coming into the picture, existing storylines were already packed, and there was only so much television time available to go around.

“Because a lot of new people came up, a lot of stories were full. We all know there is only a certain amount of time for certain people.”

So Dragunov waited. There wasn’t some dramatic backstage incident that he pointed to or a secret plan to leave WWE months ahead of time — another creative opportunity just never materialized before his deal reached the finish line.

“Everything I know is that the expiration of my contract came and that the negotiations did not lead anywhere.”

Helwani then asked Dragunov directly about one of the bigger questions surrounding those negotiations: did WWE ask him to take a pay cut? That’s where Dragunov decided there were some details he wasn’t willing to make public.

“Did they offer me a pay cut? To be honest, I am too much of a discreet businessman to talk about these kinds of things.”

Dragunov wouldn’t confirm or deny whether money was specifically the sticking point, but he did make one thing pretty clear. Whatever WWE was offering him — financially, creatively or as an overall package — wasn’t enough to convince him that staying was something he absolutely needed to do.

“Everything I can say is there was nothing I felt was satisfying and nothing that gave me the perspective of, like, ‘Okay, I MUST stick with here.’”

That adds another piece to Dragunov’s explanation of how his WWE exit actually happened. He previously revealed that he had no idea his appearance in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal in April would become his final WWE match, because he hadn’t decided at that point that he was leaving.

Dragunov also confirmed that WWE didn’t simply want to get rid of him. He said there was “no intention of the company to let me go,” but as his contract ran down, the two sides ultimately couldn’t reach terms that made staying feel like the right choice for him.

“It was an accumulation of a lot of things. It was an accumulation of the offers, because we know it’s a business, but it was also based on my feeling — how do I want to work creatively? Do I need a scenery change? Where can I see myself staying forever?”

That means Dragunov’s four-month disappearance and eventual exit weren’t necessarily part of some long-term plan to jump to AEW. He was waiting for WWE creative from April through August, negotiations ultimately failed to give him a reason he felt he “must” stay, and once his contract expired, he was free to look somewhere else.

Dragunov still isn’t revealing the private details of those WWE negotiations, especially when it comes to money. What he is making clear is that months without creative followed by an offer he didn’t find satisfying ultimately made the decision to find that “fresh air” somewhere else a whole lot easier.
