Hijo de Fishman is out of custody, and the legal nightmare that started with referee Gerardo Germán Pineda’s death appears to be over.
El Patrón Espectáculos and CEO Edgar Sandoval announced that Hijo de Fishman was released on October 8 after reaching a reparatory agreement with Pineda’s family. The company’s legal team made it clear the agreement wasn’t just enough to get him out — it also brought the criminal process to a stop. Sandoval broke the news by confirming Hijo de Fishman was already free and standing with them while attorneys explained how they got there.
“Dear media, today we have news for you. Hijo de Fishman has obtained his freedom. However, right now the law firm representing us, Magallanes, Reyes y Asociados, will give some context on how we are living these moments of Hijo de Fishman’s freedom.”
The attorney then got straight to the point, saying negotiations produced a reparatory agreement and that Hijo de Fishman was released because of it.
“Through the efforts of the firm and the personnel who make it up, a reparatory agreement was reached in which Mr. Fishman is now free.”
Then came the part that matters most. The legal team said the agreement included compensation tied to the incident and that there was no need for the case to keep moving deeper into the criminal process.
“Through this reparatory agreement and a reparation of the damage for these unfortunate events, in which in a certain way there was no situation of going further in a process, we concluded and his freedom was achieved today.”
That is a massive shift from where things stood less than two days earlier. Hijo de Fishman had been detained after El Búho died during a wrestling match in Hidalgo, with authorities initially investigating the matter as possible involuntary manslaughter. Pineda collapsed during the main event after becoming physically involved in the match, and paramedics were unable to save him.
Now Hijo de Fishman is free, a deal has been reached with El Búho’s family, and the attorney’s own wording indicates the criminal process has been resolved rather than simply delayed. Sandoval also shut down the idea that Hijo de Fishman was still sitting somewhere waiting for the next legal move. He pointed out that the wrestler was already with them and said a full press conference is coming.
“You are seeing it here, he is already here with us. In due course we will hold a press conference together with his family and the lawyers who are representing us.”
He also urged people to stop speculating before that happens. The case exploded after the main event at the Centro Deportivo Cultural 11 de Julio in Mineral de la Reforma, where El Búho suffered a medical emergency following physical contact during the match. Local reports said a martinete, the Mexican term commonly used for a piledriver, was part of the sequence before he collapsed.
Pineda was no rookie referee. He had spent nearly three decades working matches in Hidalgo after previously wrestling for around 15 years as El Búho Negro II. What started as a wrestling show turned into a death investigation, a detention and the possibility of criminal charges. Now, after an agreement with El Búho’s family, Hijo de Fishman has walked free and his legal team says there is no reason for the process to go any further.
That makes the upcoming press conference the next big moment. Hijo de Fishman, his family and the attorneys are expected to address the entire mess in detail — but from a legal standpoint, the fight appears to be over.
