Former WWE manager Slick is recovering in the ICU after suffering a heart attack and undergoing open-heart surgery, according to an update shared by Steve Stasiak of Book Pro Wrestlers.
The scary news came just hours after fans were celebrating the anniversary of Slick’s WWF debut. Stasiak said the wrestling world went from looking back on Kenneth Johnson’s career to suddenly praying for his recovery.
“Only hours ago, we were celebrating the anniversary of Slick’s WWF debut and reflecting on everything he has brought to professional wrestling. We could not have imagined that before the day was over, we would be asking everyone to pray for the man behind the character, Kenneth Johnson.”
There is some good news. Slick made it to the hospital in time, survived surgery and is now said to be recovering, though the process is moving slowly. Stasiak said the update came through Andrew Anderson, who received the information from Mary Alice Gray, the wife of One Man Gang, after she spoke directly with Slick.
“The encouraging news is that Slick reached the hospital in time, made it through surgery and is said to be on the mend. His recovery is moving slowly, but right now, recovery is all that matters.”
“Please keep Slick, his family and the medical team caring for him in your prayers. Get well, Slick. The wrestling world is pulling for you.”
Slick became one of WWE’s most memorable managers during the 1980s and early 1990s, working with names including One Man Gang, Big Boss Man and others during his run with the company.
For now, the focus is completely on Slick’s recovery after a frightening medical emergency. The fact that he reached the hospital in time and made it through surgery is a major positive, and the wrestling world will be hoping the good news keeps coming.
