Sinner & Saint are opening up about why they chose to leave TNA Wrestling, and it turns out the decision wasn’t about bad blood. Instead, the duo felt they needed to bet on themselves and get back to doing what made them successful in the first place.
Speaking on In The Weeds, Judas Icarus and Travis Williams discussed their TNA departures for the first time, revealing that they requested their releases because they wanted to be recognized primarily as a tag team.
Icarus said they enjoyed their time in TNA and had the chance to work with names like Josh Alexander and Eric Young, but eventually realized the company’s direction no longer lined up with what they wanted to accomplish.
“We had just been there for a pretty long time and we had been really happy with a lot of the experience that we had gotten and gotten to work with Josh Alexander and Eric Young, I think specifically were big highlights… I think it just got to a point where we really wanted to show that we were tag team wrestlers and that that was our speciality and that’s what we were there for.”
According to Icarus, they didn’t feel there was much interest in pushing them as a tag team, so they decided the best move was to go back to the independent scene and prove themselves all over again.
“It felt like there wasn’t too big of an interest in running with that at the moment… I just felt like we had to prove ourselves and we wanted the chance to do that so I think, yeah, asking for our release was kind of the best route for us.”
“Because that’s kind of how we got there in the first place, right? As tag team wrestlers. I think we wanted to just show ourselves the best we could again. Put ourselves out there so I think, yeah, that’s what we’re doing now.”
Williams echoed those thoughts, saying the decision ultimately came down to betting on themselves instead of waiting for an opportunity that might never come.
“I would just say yeah, give ourselves an opportunity and kind of bet on ourselves, and kind of pick up the ball on our own, which is just something that I think we both knew we needed to do for a little bit.”
He added that the journey isn’t just about proving themselves to promoters and fans—it’s also about proving something to themselves by testing their abilities against the best teams around the world.
“Everything Judas said — 10-fold — and then also prove ourselves to ourself I think was another thing as well. As much as we needed to prove ourselves to everyone else, I think just being, ‘We can do this. This is something we know we can do and we could prove that ourselves and gotta go test ourselves against the best,’ whether that’s in Germany or whether that’s in England or whether that’s Wales… Check, check and check…”
Since leaving TNA earlier this year, Sinner & Saint have already returned to the independent wrestling scene and have competed across the United States and internationally. Based on their comments, it sounds like that was exactly the fresh start they were looking for.
