Chris Jericho and Don Callis had a rough one on the August 12 edition of AEW Dynamite. A screwdriver interference spot went so wrong that Jericho basically had to walk himself into position while still holding Kevin Knight in the Walls of Jericho—and fans absolutely noticed.
One fan went straight for the kill on Twitter, calling it one of the worst wrestling spots they’ve seen in decades. They weren’t interested in giving Jericho or Callis much benefit of the doubt.
“might be the worse spot in the past 25 years, prove me wrong #aew.”
Another fan somehow managed to make their review even shorter. For them, the whole thing was bad enough to write off wrestling entirely.
“Yeah man.. Wrestling is dead. Pack this s*** up lmao.”
Then came the questions about how two veterans could make such a basic interference spot look this awkward. One fan also put plenty of blame on AEW’s production team for keeping the camera directly on Jericho while he visibly moved himself into position.
“How can two guys with 20+ years in the business fuck up a basic spot like that? But the worst offender may be the camera crew and/or director for keeping the camera squarely on Jericho while he’s getting in position. A simple 2 second cut to the crowd could have hid everything.”
And another fan couldn’t get past the most obvious part of the whole thing. Jericho had started around the middle of the ring and somehow ended up bringing the Walls of Jericho toward the ropes.
“So Jericho moved from the middle of the ring to the ropes. We gonna talk about that.”
The spot happened during Jericho’s TNT Championship challenge against Kevin Knight on the August 12 edition of Dynamite at The Pearl Theater in Las Vegas. Jericho had Knight trapped in the Walls when things started going sideways.
Jericho appeared to motion for Callis to approach from the other direction, but Callis climbed onto the apron before dropping back down. With Callis apparently not where he needed to be, Jericho started stepping toward the ropes while somehow keeping Knight in the Walls.
Once Jericho finally reached the right spot, Callis climbed back onto the apron and jabbed him in the head with the screwdriver. By then, the camera had already shown Jericho’s entire trip across the ring.
Knight eventually survived the chaos and retained his TNT Championship after hitting Jericho with a low blow and Crash Landing. But the finish wasn’t what had fans talking once the match was over.
Instead, they were stuck on Jericho walking the Walls of Jericho toward Callis while AEW’s camera stayed right there to capture it. When fans are debating whether the wrestlers or the production crew botched something worse, you know the spot didn’t exactly go according to plan.
