Darby Allin’s AEW World Title win should’ve been a celebration—but instead, it’s turning into a controversy as a lot of fans are furious over AEW’s decision.

Allin defeated MJF in the main event of Dynamite Spring BreakThru on April 15, overpowering him with multiple Coffin Drops to secure the pin and capture the title. The win marked the biggest moment of Allin’s career and instantly shifted AEW’s main event picture. But instead of celebration, the immediate fallout online has been dominated by backlash over how the match played out.

Fans took to Twitter right after the show, calling out what they saw as a one-sided squash—especially coming so soon after MJF had been presented as a dominant champion. One fan pointed to how top stars are usually protected in similar situations, comparing the booking to WWE’s biggest names.

“You would never see Roman Reigns or Cody Rhodes get squashed in a title defense on tv right after defending it in a PPV. Tony Khan needs to let someone else take over creative.”

Another reaction pointed directly at the contrast between MJF’s win over Kenny Omega at AEW Dynasty and this loss: “to beat Kenny omega then to get squashed by a 120 pound kid jeeepers 😭😭😭😭😭”

Some criticism centered on Allin himself, with fans questioning whether he fits the role of a top champion: “Darby has to be the one of the least believable Heavyweight Champions of all time. Odd decision.” Others took a more direct shot at the booking decision, arguing that the outcome didn’t match MJF’s status in the company: “This is f***** MJF bro wtf are you doing letting a pipsqueak boy figured wrestler squash him?”

The reaction puts the focus squarely on how the match was structured rather than just the result itself. While Allin’s win was meant to signal a major shift in AEW’s main event scene, the conversation coming out of Dynamite has been dominated by whether MJF was protected enough in defeat.

Darby Allin is now the face of AEW—but the way he got there has clearly divided opinion, with the debate now centered on whether the finish helped elevate him or hurt MJF in the process.

Do you think Darby Allin’s win over MJF was the right call, or did the match hurt AEW’s top star too much? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.
