A former WWE star has been appearing for ROH without actually being under contract. Despite wrestling at recent tapings and becoming a familiar face in the promotion, Alex Zayne is said to be working without a deal with either AEW or Ring of Honor.
According to Fightful Select, Zayne is not currently signed to either AEW or ROH. His most recent appearance came at last week’s ROH tapings, where he competed despite not having an official contract with either promotion.
Before becoming a regular name on the independent scene, Zayne spent a brief stint in WWE after signing with the company in late 2020. Wrestling under the name Ari Sterling, he debuted on 205 Live in May 2021 before making appearances on NXT. His run lasted less than a year, as he was released in August 2021.
Following his WWE departure, Zayne quickly rebuilt his career across several promotions, including NJPW, GCW and IMPACT Wrestling. He also returned to Ring of Honor in 2021, where he won the Honor Rumble at Death Before Dishonor, helping re-establish himself as one of the standout names on the independent circuit.
Even with his recent ROH appearances, the report notes there is currently no indication that AEW or ROH plans to offer Zayne a full-time contract. For now, it appears he’s continuing to work on a per-appearance basis while remaining one of wrestling’s more notable free agents.
Do you think AEW or ROH should sign this talent, or is he better off staying a free agent? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
