Eugene’s WWE run was packed with over-the-top comedy, but according to him, Ric Flair once tried to take things in an even more adult direction.
During an interview with Inside The Ropes, Eugene opened up about how both Flair and Triple H played a big role in shaping his character — and not all of their ideas were PG.
Eugene explained that WWE management constantly wanted to find new ways to lean into the comedy side of his character with backstage segments and funny moments. But Ric Flair, always living up to his “Nature Boy” reputation, had other ideas.
“A lot of it was like what we were doing in the backstage promos or how to act and how to be funny. They kept wanting to try to do funny things with Eugene. Ric Flair wanted to get Eugene laid — be in the bed with like the girls. And then I wanted to do like the Wayne’s World where Garth puts the pipe in his mouth and it starts blowing the bubbles. I thought it’d be good for Eugene, but it didn’t happen.”
The adult-themed pitch from Flair never made it to WWE television, but it reflects the type of outrageous creative discussions happening behind the scenes at the time. Eugene made it clear that while not all the ideas stuck, both Flair and Triple H were constantly involved in trying to evolve the character.
Love it or hate it, the Eugene character left a mark during one of WWE’s most unpredictable eras — and clearly, things could have gotten even wilder if Flair had his way.
