Ethan Page has been showing fans a different side of him for the past several weeks and it’s clear he has really come into his own as a heel on NXT. That is precisely why it’s no surprise that he accused John Cena of pretending to earn his spot at the Royal Rumble this year.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Ethan Page accused John Cena of pretending to earn his spot in the Royal Rumble while having the privilege to announce himself in the match without competition. Page was frustrated that he does not have the same advantages as Cena, who can simply declare his participation, while he has to work his way up from NXT, facing challengers and proving himself to earn opportunities like the Royal Rumble.
Page stated that if he had the ability to walk into a room and announce himself in the match, he would do it immediately. However, WWE has not granted him those privileges. Page stated that Cena portrays himself as earning his opportunities while actually doing whatever he wants, which he thinks is unfair.
“I mean, yeah, that’s definitely on the to-do list—100%. And I would happily do that, but I don’t have the same privileges as John Cena. He gets to pretend that he’s earning everything, come on the microphone, and say, ‘Oh guys, you know, I don’t want you to think I’m just showing up and taking spots. I’m going to earn my spot,’ and then just announce that he’s in the Royal Rumble.
I don’t have the privilege of just saying, ‘Hey guys, my name’s Ethan Page, I’m in the Royal Rumble now.’ I have to earn everything. I’m starting in NXT, building my way up to these challengers, these championships, and these opportunities—like the Royal Rumble.
So yeah, if I could just walk into a room and announce myself in the Rumble, I’d do it right now. I would announce myself in the Rumble on the show. But that’s not the opportunities and privileges that Ethan Page is being granted in WWE. John Cena gets to pretend like he’s earning everything while just doing what he wants. Good for him.”
Ethan Page spoke from the heart and it’s likely many people will actually agree with what he had to say. Regardless, it remains to be seen whether Page will end up competing in the Royal Rumble match and share the ring with John Cena this year.
