Drew McIntyre has built a reputation for cutting some of the sharpest promos in WWE, but it turns out they’ve occasionally hit a little too close to home.
Speaking on the Soder podcast, McIntyre revealed that some wrestlers have actually gotten upset over things he’s said in promos and on social media because they thought he was taking personal shots at them. According to Drew, that’s never been the case.
He explained that after returning to WWE, he stopped trying to play a character and instead leaned into his real personality. Since talking trash comes naturally to him, he decided to bring that same energy to television.
“The past few years, when I was outside the company, I really worked on the microphone stuff. I came back, found my voice, finally found my character—which is basically me. There’s a lot of truth in there.
“And then I found, like, in real life, I just talk so much crap, and people are always laughing. But I’m not like yourself. I’m not, like, intent—I can’t sit and write something. I’m just unintentionally funny, apparently.
“And then sometime I was like, I kind of rip on people a lot. I’m British. I’m Scottish. We talk crap all the time. Maybe I should start doing that on screen.”
That approach has apparently been so convincing that some of his coworkers forgot there was a difference between the performer and the person.
“And I really started letting people have it to the point they were forgetting they’re playing a character. They’re like, ‘You said that about me.’ No, I did. I said that about your character on Twitter. Don’t be such a loser. It’s not you. It’s the character I’m talking to.”
McIntyre has never been shy about blurring the line between reality and storyline, and by the sound of it, he’s done it well enough to lead to a few awkward backstage conversations. It’s also a big reason why his promos have become must-see TV over the last few years.
