Dragon Lee’s character was not thrown together by a creative team backstage. The name and mask trace back to his family, his late uncle and the martial arts icon who inspired generations around the world.
While speaking with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, the WWE star explained that Bruce Lee and his family’s background in kung fu helped shape the Dragon Lee identity.
“The character comes from inspiration of Bruce Lee, and we trained kung fu. That’s why I know what this character means.”
The name also carries a deep family connection. Dragon Lee revealed that his late uncle originally gave the character to his older brothers, although Lee admitted he was not sold on it when he first heard it. His uncle believed the name would eventually grow into something special, even if it sounded unusual at the time.
“My uncle passed away, and he gave my brothers the name. He said, ‘You have to be Dragon Lee.’ I was there when he told them, and I was like, ‘It sounds very—I don’t know. Dragon Lee, I don’t like how it sounds.’”
“He told us, ‘Right now it sounds weird, but with time it’s going to sound better.’”
That prediction turned out to be dead on. Dragon Lee’s older brother originally wrestled under the name before becoming Místico, opening the door for Lee to inherit the mask and build his own legacy with it.
Lee has since changed parts of the original mask design while keeping its most important meaning intact. The mask includes a dragon, a temple, a yin-yang symbol and lettering connected to his hometown and Japanese translation of the character.
What started as a name Dragon Lee did not even like has become one of the most recognizable identities in modern lucha libre. He did not simply inherit the character—he turned it into his own and carried his family’s vision onto WWE’s biggest stages.
