AEW Dynamite has been running so far past its normal ending time that fans are starting to wonder if the show is quietly becoming two-and-a-half hours long.
That is not the case right now, as there have been no known discussions about officially expanding Dynamite beyond its regular two-hour format. Sean Ross Sapp addressed the current status during a Fightful Select Q&A after being asked whether AEW had discussed making the longer runtime permanent.
“Not that I’ve ever heard. AEW does have a dedicated and committed number of hours in its current television deal, and they’re able to go over their allotted time pretty regularly.”
Those overruns are not happening by accident. Sapp said Warner Bros. Discovery is getting additional AEW content from them, and AEW sources told him the extra minutes do not count toward the number of programming hours the company owes WBD.
“WBD is getting 30 minutes of free content throughout all this, and AEW sources that I talked to told me that it didn’t really go toward the hours that AEW owes WBD in that sense.”
The network appears to be happy with the arrangement, giving AEW a good reason to keep allowing Dynamite to run long without officially changing its scheduled length.
“If Warner Brothers wants the overruns, why would they not do them? They are appeasing their broadcast partners so they can get their 2028 option picked up. That’s pretty much what it is.”
For now, AEW Dynamite remains a two-hour show on paper. The company can keep using overruns when WBD wants more content, but there is currently no sign that an official two-and-a-half-hour version of Dynamite is being planned.
