Chelsea Green’s broken orbital bone may not derail her championship run after all. Despite the injury sending her to the emergency room, WWE is reportedly optimistic about her status and isn’t currently expecting to take her off television or strip her of the title.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, WWE remains optimistic about Green’s injury status. She is not expected to be removed from television or stripped of the WWE Women’s Championship.
That’s an encouraging update after what initially looked like it could create a major problem for Green’s title reign. Green suffered the injury during her SmackDown tag team match alongside Tiffany Stratton against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid. It happened during the finish when Fatal Influence delivered the Rolling Encore.
Bryan Alvarez later explained on Wrestling Observer Radio that Reid came down on Green’s head during the move. What made the injury particularly surprising was how normal the finish looked on television.
“They did the match and everything was going along as it should, and then at the very end Fatal Influence hit Chelsea with their finish. It looked on TV like everything was fine, but in fact everything was not fine. Lainey fell on Chelsea’s head in doing the move, and Chelsea broke her orbital bone.”
Green subsequently revealed that she had been in the emergency room with a broken orbital bone, but didn’t initially explain exactly how it happened. The accident has also put some attention on the Rolling Encore itself. Alvarez said he has heard criticism of the move from people within wrestling following Green’s injury.
“I have heard people saying within wrestling that this is not a good finish anyway, so we’ll see if they end up getting a new finish.”
For Green, though, the latest word is considerably more encouraging. There’s still no confirmed timetable for when she’ll be cleared to wrestle again, but WWE’s reported optimism means the company apparently doesn’t expect the injury to force an immediate change at the top of the women’s division.
For now, Chelsea Green remains champion, WWE expects to keep her on television, and the company appears hopeful that her broken orbital bone won’t force them to change course.
