Chelsea Green believes WWE fans are the reason she became the first Women’s United States Champion—and she says the company had no choice but to listen.
While speaking to Nerdspin, Green was asked whether holding a championship no one had carried before felt different from chasing a title with an established history. For Green, the moment was bigger than simply adding another belt to her résumé. Green said the support from the WWE audience became so strong that it pushed the company to put the championship on her.
“I think one really beautiful thing about that belt is I won it because the fans got so behind me that they forced WWE to make that decision. Truly.”
Green did not view the victory as something she accomplished alone. She felt like the fans who continued cheering for her were part of the title win, especially when the crowd realized she was about to finish the match.
“I felt like I didn’t just win it for myself. I won it for all the people who were cheering for me. The moment that I went to hit my finisher in the ring, you can see it, feel it and hear it if you go back and watch those clips.”
That fan support also gave Green something that can never be taken away. No matter who holds the championship in the future, her name will always be listed as the first woman to win it. Green also knows WWE will have to include her whenever the company looks back at the championship’s history.
“Because they pushed so hard for me and we collectively did it, that can never be erased from the history books. Until the day that I die, I will always be the first-ever Women’s United States Champion, and I love that.”
“When I think about the packages that you see on TV for the titles, they have to include me because I was the first.”
The championship gave Green the career-defining moment she had been searching for. She knew she could win titles during her WWE run, but becoming the inaugural champion guaranteed that fans would always remember her place in company history.
“It’s an exciting moment for me in my career because I knew there were going to be times when I might win championships, but you always think, ‘What are you going to be remembered for?’ That’s one thing I know I will be remembered for.”
Green’s title reign may be over, but becoming the first WWE Women’s United States Champion permanently connected her name to the championship. She credits the fans for turning their support into a moment WWE could no longer ignore.
