Chad Gable left RAW with the Intercontinental Championship, but the title defense itself wasn’t what he was thinking about afterwards. Less thana day after beating Rey Mysterio, Gable thanked the WWE Hall of Famer for a match that made him “feel alive.”
Gable took to Instagram following their Intercontinental Championship match on the August 17 edition of RAW and had nothing but praise for the man he had just beaten.
For Gable, the remarkable part isn’t simply that Mysterio can still perform at such a high level this deep into his career. It’s that after everything Rey has accomplished, Gable says he’s still one of the most humble people he’s encountered in wrestling.
“Last night I had the honor of defending the Intercontinental Championship against one of the greatest Professional Wrestlers of all time.
But what’s more astonishing to me than Rey’s continued ability to perform at the level he did last night at this point in his career — is the fact that a guy with his list of accomplishments in this business can be as genuinely humble, gracious, and grounded as he is.
Rey Mysterio is truly a human being like no other I’ve ever met. All class.”
Gable and Mysterio had pushed each other deep into their championship match on RAW. Rey survived multiple Angle Slams, including one from the top rope, while Gable survived two 619s before getting his knees up when Mysterio came flying from the top.
Gable eventually escaped with his championship by catching Mysterio in a small package. None of that was what Gable wanted to talk about afterward. Instead, he summed up what sharing the ring with Mysterio meant to him in three short lines.
“Our encounter was, and is, everything I love about Pro Wrestling.
I felt alive.
Thank you, Rey.”
Gable got the win and kept his championship, but his message afterwards wasn’t about either one. This was about getting the chance to share the ring with Rey Mysterio—and apparently remembering exactly why he fell in love with professional wrestling in the first place.
