Carmella has opened up about one of the most difficult moments in her marriage, revealing there was a point during her ectopic pregnancy when she briefly wondered whether she and Corey Graves would make it through the experience together.
Speaking on the October 6 edition of her Hot Mom S**t podcast, Carmella reflected on how differently she and Graves processed the medical emergency. She recalled being transported by ambulance to another hospital while feeling like he didn’t fully understand how serious the situation had become.
“I went through something very similar with my husband when I was having my ectopic pregnancy. He just—it just didn’t hit him. Like, he didn’t understand.
I’m in the hospital and I’m getting transported by ambulance to another hospital, and he was just like, ‘Oh, I have to go home,’ because his son was getting a haircut.”
Carmella admitted she was shocked that something as ordinary as a haircut even entered the conversation while she was facing what she believed was a potentially life-threatening situation.
“He’s like, ‘Oh, I have to go. He has to get his haircut.’ And I’m like, but I’m like literally missing—these are not equal priorities.”
She explained that, from her perspective, the danger was immediate. While Graves was still hoping the pregnancy might somehow continue, she was worried about the very real medical risks associated with an ectopic pregnancy.
“It just didn’t compute to me, and I’m like, I don’t understand why he’s not—like, why he doesn’t understand the gravity of this situation.
Because it just didn’t hit him yet. It just, like, didn’t. Like, he thought there was still a chance. Like, I could still be pregnant and, like, it wasn’t going to miscarry.
It didn’t hit, and, like, men and women look at things so differently. And for me, I’m like, this could, like, rupture my fallopian tube. Like, I’m thinking, like, I don’t even want to move the wrong way because I could potentially die. Like, crazy. And I just remember being, like, so mad at him, and he didn’t get it.”
According to Carmella, everything changed a few days later when the reality of the situation finally sank in for Graves.
“And then it was not until, like, a few days later it hit him, and he, like—he, like, broke. He was like, ‘Oh my God, like, now I’m, like, understanding.’ And he was so apologetic.”
She also recalled that Graves had been scheduled to leave for a work trip while she was miscarrying. Although his employer allowed him to stay home, Carmella said he initially felt guilty about missing work, while she couldn’t understand why there was even a decision to make.
“He actually did have a work trip he needed to go on while I was miscarrying, and luckily his job told him he could stay home.
And he was, like, guilty about going to work—I mean, about not going to work. He’s like, ‘Oh, I have to be home with you, but, like, I feel like I should be going to work.’ And I’m like, ‘No, like, you need to be home with me.’”
Carmella was quick to make it clear that she doesn’t see Graves as an unsupportive husband. Instead, she believes they were both dealing with an incredibly traumatic situation in different ways.
“It really was just—it was such a whirlwind of emotions. But I think when we finally landed, and I know people are going to listen like, ‘Oh, your husband’s an asshole.’ It’s like, no, he’s not. He’s incredible and he’s so supportive.
But it’s—until you’re in the situation, it’s a lot easier to say what you would do until you’re actually in it.”
She then revealed just how emotionally overwhelming that period became, admitting that the thought of divorce briefly crossed her mind because she couldn’t understand why he wasn’t by her side the way she needed him to be.
“If you’re going to be committed to this relationship, which I—I wasn’t like, ‘That’s it, I’m divorcing him,’ because, I mean, don’t get me wrong, I definitely thought it for a minute.
I was like, ‘Does he not even understand that he has to sit with me when I’m sick?’”
Looking back now, Carmella says what mattered most wasn’t how either of them reacted in the moment, but how they grew afterwards. She believes the experience ultimately strengthened their marriage because Graves recognized what had happened, learned from it, and became a better partner through the ordeal.
“But, like, props to your husband and to mine, who I did see, like, them learn from that experience significantly.
And I think with all of this, if we don’t know what we’re being thrust into until we’re thrust into it, you can’t have the expectation that they’re going to understand.
But if they can see and grow from it, that’s, like, almost more important in some way, right? Because I—for me, that was, like, a very pivotal moment for us. And he did significantly grow from that experience.”
Carmella said pregnancy loss can bring out emotions that are difficult to process in the moment, including anger and thoughts about whether a relationship can survive. With time, however, she came to realize that people don’t always grieve or react the same way, and that understanding those differences ultimately helped her and Graves move forward together.
“I think it’s hard when you’re in it because you do feel, like, all of these emotions and this rage and feeling like, ‘Oh, divorce. Like, why? Like, we’re not going to be together. Like, how is he not here for me in, like, this devastating time?’
But everyone takes things differently. And I think being able to just be open and honest and know that everyone handles things differently, I think that’s completely fair.”
Looking back now, Carmella says that difficult period ultimately made their relationship stronger. While she admitted divorce briefly crossed her mind in the middle of everything, she believes what mattered most was that Corey eventually understood what she was going through, learned from the experience and was able to grow alongside her after one of the toughest moments of their marriage.
