Bret Hart wasn’t just disappointed when WrestleMania 9 ended — he was furious enough to take his frustration out on a wall backstage. The Hitman says the situation got so heated that he ended up injuring his own hand while Hulk Hogan was walking away with the WWE Championship.
During an interview with Inside The Ropes, Hart revisited the chaotic ending to his WrestleMania 9 match against Yokozuna. Bret had already been told that he was losing the WWE Championship, but he said his anger really boiled over after Yokozuna unexpectedly cut out much of the comeback Hart had planned for the closing stretch.
Hart said he tried to remain professional throughout everything WWE asked him to do that night. Once he returned backstage, however, that frustration finally came out.
“I did it as professional as I could. I tried to did everything as professional as I could and I came back to the dressing room and I was pissed off and I remember I punched a wall because I wasn’t happy about my match with Yoko either.”
Bret said the issue wasn’t simply that he lost the WWE Championship. He was angry because he believed Yokozuna had cut out the material Hart had specifically saved for the strongest part of their match.
“I was always pissed off at Yoko for cutting my ending, cutting out my best stuff.”
That anger turned physical once Hart reached the dressing room. Bret punched the wall and quickly discovered there was something waiting for his hand on the other side of that decision.
“I remember I punched a wall in the dressing room and it was a nail in the wall.”
Hart said the punch left him bleeding, and he immediately regretted letting his temper get that far.
“My hand was bleeding and I’m like mad that I did that.”
Things got even more awkward moments later. Hulk Hogan had just defeated Yokozuna for the WWE Championship, and Bret said Hogan walked into the dressing room carrying what Hart still viewed as his title.
According to Bret, Hogan thanked him and promised that he would eventually return the favor by doing business with Hart. Their relationship didn’t exactly get smoother from there, and Ringside News previously covered Hart’s claim that he later confronted Hogan after learning Hogan wasn’t going to put him over.
WrestleMania 9 was already a brutal night for Bret Hart professionally, but this story shows how personal the frustration became once he got backstage.
