Becky Lynch didn’t mince words while reflecting on how women were treated in WWE before the division fully evolved into what fans see today.

During a conversation with Vulture, Lynch opened up about what life was like during the Divas era, revealing that female wrestlers were often pushed into entertainment-style segments rather than being treated as serious competitors. She explained that instead of focusing on in-ring competition, women were sometimes required to perform dance routines and throw merchandise to the crowd.

After discussing how those expectations shaped the early years of her WWE career, Lynch described one moment that still stands out when she looks back on that period.

“All the women's wrestlers had to go out in the middle of the show on live events and throw the dance in the ring to ‘Let's Get Loud’ and throw out t-shirts. Like, this is what we… And this was 2014. I know… 2015. Like, what are we freaking talking about, you know? And this was what we were doing. We were dancing and throwing out t-shirts. Get with it, you know?”

She also explained that those expectations extended beyond performance style. In many cases, women were expected to fit a certain appearance-driven mold before being allowed to show their wrestling abilities.

“It was one of those things where you kind of had to fall in line before you could break out of it… you had to be a looker and you had to do the dance moves… and then once you are established in that role then you can break out and show that you can be more serious.”

Looking back now, Lynch’s comments paint a clear picture of how drastically the women’s division has changed over the past decade. What once included dance segments and merchandise tosses eventually led to women headlining WrestleMania and delivering main-event level performances.

Do you think WWE has completely moved past the Divas-era mindset, or are there still traces of that approach today? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
